What Is a Baseline EEG?

A baseline EEG is a simple brain test done before a major health change, injury, or treatment. It shows what a person’s brain activity looks like when they are doing well, so it can be compared to future EEGs if symptoms appear later.

The recording usually takes an hour and is safe and painless.

Why a Baseline EEG Can Be Helpful

  • Personal reference: Everyone’s brain is different. A baseline EEG shows what is normal for you or your child and gives us something to compare to in the future.
  • Early detection: If memory, attention, or thinking changes over time, we can see whether brain activity has changed.
  • Clearer answers: Comparing EEGs helps avoid confusion and supports better treatment and therapeutic decisions.
  • Monitoring brain health: For older adults, a baseline can help track brain changes related to aging or cognitive decline. For children, a baseline can be compared to a future EEG in the event of a concussion to see what areas and networks of the brain were damaged.

A baseline EEG can offer peace of mind and support early, informed care when brain health matters most.
